Two fatalities and one serious injury were caused by a traffic accident on the A9 between the Gefrees and Mnchberg/Sd junctions early on Sunday evening (April 10, 2022).
The Upper Franconia police headquarters announced this in a statement in the evening.
Fatal accident on the A9 near Gefrees: Two people die in the accident
According to the current findings of the Hof traffic police, a 56-year-old driver from the Erding district in Upper Bavaria was driving north on the A9 shortly after 5.45 p.m. For reasons still unclear, his car skidded in the left lane and crashed into the rear of a car driving to his right from the Anhalt-Bitterfeld registration area in Saxony-Anhalt.
As a result, the two vehicles first crashed into the right outer barrier before swerving onto the freeway and coming to a stop at the center barrier. Vehicles stuck in each other immediately burst into flames. While first responders were able to rescue the author of the accident from his car, any help arrived too late for the two occupants of the other car. Both died in the completely burned-out vehicle wrecks, which were extinguished by surrounding firefighters. According to current knowledge, the two dead are an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman from the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld. An emergency medical team took the seriously injured 56-year-old to hospital.
The northbound A9 motorway is currently (as of 9.45 p.m.) completely closed for the duration of the accident investigation. Traffic is diverted at Gefrees Junction by the Motorway Maintenance Department. A Bayreuth public prosecutor obtained a picture of what was happening on the spot and assigned an expert to help the Hof traffic police clarify the course of the accident. A total of about 90 emergency services from the surrounding fire department, rescue service, technical rescue organization, highway maintenance department and pastors supported the police at the scene of the accident. The traffic accident resulted in total material damage estimated at 50,000 euros.
