Vivo X Fold – vivo presents the first foldable smartphone

The foldable combines aerospace hinges, a camera system developed jointly with ZEISS and high-end glasses from SCHOTT

  • Camera system developed in collaboration with ZEISS with characteristic T* coating for excellent image quality
  • Collapsible display with Xensation® Flex, collapsible glass from the SCHOTT UTG® family
  • Unlock both screens via dual 3D ultrasonic fingerprint reader

Düsseldorf, April 11, 2022 – With the X Fold, vivo presented its first foldable smartphone. The first of its kind in the brand’s range, it incorporates a number of advanced technologies and sets new standards with a significant reduction in screen creases and improved hinge stability. The vivo Foldable offers an absolute premium experience thanks to exceptional display, chipset and battery performance as well as a camera system developed with ZEISS. In particular, the new format supports the viewing of image and video content, useful multitasking functions, thus enabling a more efficient, convenient and creative smartphone experience. The vivo X Fold will initially be available exclusively in China.

Exceptional recordings, thanks to a camera system co-developed by ZEISS

The vivo X Fold’s camera system was jointly developed by vivo and ZEISS. It features ZEISS-certified lenses along with the signature ZEISS T* coating, which increases the overall optical performance of the lens by reducing glare and reflections. In this way, the performance of high-resolution sensors can be fully utilized.

The X Fold is equipped with a full-focus quad camera and benefits from ZEISS calibration for natural colors, ZEISS texture portraits and other scene-filling effects. This ensures clear and realistic shots, whether it’s close-ups or stunning landscapes.

Deploy the future

The vivo X Fold incorporates a number of advanced technologies and sets new standards with significantly reduced screen creases and improved hinge stability. An essential element in the development of a foldable smartphone is the construction of a robust hinge. Since this is essential to the user experience, vivo has incorporated an aerospace-grade folding hinge. The hinge and screen crease have been tested in extensive tests by TÜV Rheinland, both of which passed over 300,000 times with flying colors. Vivo lab studies have shown that a foldable opens and closes about 80 times a day. This means the vivo X Fold can be used reliably for up to 10 years.

The X Fold’s hinge consists of 174 parts and uses aerospace-grade materials that provide strength, impact resistance, and resistance to bending and corrosion. To optimize folding, the vivo X Fold uses a floating center panel that provides additional stability. This allows the screen to unfold more flat when unfolded. The X Fold uses durable display glass with a unique interlocking structure and a peak bend radius of 2.3 millimeters. This not only makes the screen crease narrow, but also makes it almost completely flat, eliminating the “bulge” common in foldable designs.

Flexibility at its best

To meet the highest demands, the vivo X Fold offers an 8-inch foldable main display on the inside and a 6.53-inch display on the outside. As foldable smartphones have higher demands on color consistency, the vivo X Fold supports a 120Hz refresh rate on the main and external screens and uses E5 bulbs to ensure a smooth visual experience and power consumption. optimized energy.

vivo has also developed its own color calibration scheme, so the accuracy of color reproduction is almost identical on both screens. All of this helped the X Fold earn 19 first-time DisplayMate records and an A+ rating, currently the highest rating in the industry.

The X Fold is also the world’s first foldable smartphone to feature a dual ultrasonic 3D fingerprint reader that supports fingerprint unlocking on both screens. In addition to convenience, the device offers better fingerprint recognition and increases unlocking speed by 38% compared to traditional photoelectric mechanisms.

Top performance – inside and out

To ensure that the performance matches the appearance of the device, vivo has incorporated the next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen1 SPU chipset, which is manufactured using the 4-nanometer MEP process and compared to the Snapdragon 888 – Previous Generation chipset offers 10% better performance. GPU rendering speed has been increased by 30%, supported by UFS 3.1 flash memory and improved LPDDR5 memory, allowing the vivo X Fold to read and write data faster.

Keeping power requirements in mind, vivo has equipped the X Fold with a 4,600mAh battery that can deliver nearly 21 hours of continuous calls, 12 hours of video conferencing, or 8 hours of mobile gaming. The X Fold also features vivo’s 66W FlashCharge feature, which can charge the battery to 50% in just 17 minutes and fully charged in 37 minutes. Additionally, the foldable features the industry-leading 50W Wireless FlashCharge, which enables a 10% charge in 5 minutes and a full charge in 53 minutes.

State-of-the-art glass technology

The vivo X Fold builds on premium bezels from SCHOTT and continues the long-standing and successful partnership by combining three state-of-the-art premium bezels made in Germany: The smartphone’s foldable main screen uses a flexible glass from the SCHOTT UTG® product family that can be bent hundreds of thousands of times after processing without breaking. The external display is protected by Xensation® α, a high performance protective glass with exceptional drop resistance. The camera optics are powered by Xensation® Up. sheltered from the vagaries of daily life.
