AEG products receive seals of approval for their outstanding performance in fighting bacteria and viruses
Nuremberg, April 12, 2022
Smart programs for perfect cleanliness: Swissatest Testmaterials AG, one of Europe’s leading test centers for washing, cleaning and hygiene, certifies that AEG dishwashers, washing machines and dryers have an excellent effect in eliminating bacteria and viruses. AEG receives the famous Swissatest certification for its washing machines with the Anti-Allergy program, for its dryers with the Hygiene program and for its dishwashers with the ExtraHygiene function.
Whether dust mites, pollen, bacteria or viruses – clean and hygienic laundry is becoming increasingly important in your own home. This is also shown in the 2020 Electrolux study “The Truth About Laundry”1. Here, fighting germs was the top priority for more than one in ten adults. Many respondents cited eliminating germs as their number one reason for washing clothes. To further increase consumer confidence, AEG goes one step further by having its smart programs certified by Swissatest. While all AEG programs aim to eliminate bacteria by default, the high performance of certified devices is even more remarkable with a 99.9999% elimination rate of certain bacteria and viruses. The strict evaluation by the external test institute has shown that the special AEG programs are effective against non-enveloped viruses such as bacteriophage E. coli MS2. This type of virus is difficult to eliminate due to its high tolerance to disinfection and other cleaning measures.
“The cooperation with Swissatest supports our corporate goal of making life better. By having certified programs that eliminate up to 99.9999% of certain bacteria and viruses, we want to offer even more safety to our customers,” says Leen Devos, Care product line manager, who has worked throughout the company, including in the areas of research and development, product marketing, textile care and tableware. We are very proud that our products have passed the demanding test requirements of Swissatest and are delighted with the positive result.
“This is the first time that we, as a scientific test institute and test equipment manufacturer, can share our holistic view of washing processes, taking into account cleaning performance, durability and environmental aspects. ‘hygiene, with the end users,” says Christian Portmann, Managing Director. from Swissatest.
The certified AEG programs at a glance
Swissatest Testmaterials AG confirms the high effectiveness of the anti-allergy wash program for washing machines. This high performance wash removes over 99.99% of bacteria and viruses from laundry, including Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium2. By keeping the wash temperature above 60 degrees Celsius, the AEG program can also reduce allergens.
Tumble dryers with the special AEG hygiene program also meet the strict Swissatest test criteria. By drying textiles for at least ten minutes at a temperature above 60 degrees, the hygiene program effectively removes over 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, including Candida albicans, bacteriophage MS2 and Escherichia coli from blankets, pillows and clothes.³
The Swissatest testers were impressed by the AEG ExtraHygiene function of the partially integrated and freestanding dishwashers. During the last rinsing phase, the temperature is maintained at 69 degrees for ten minutes. This hygienically cleans dishes and removes over 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, including Micrococcus luteus and bacteriophage MS24.

Swissatest Testmaterials AG is a competence center for test materials and tests in the fields of washing, cleaning and hygiene. The tests for the hygiene label take place in the internal department “Hygiene and microbiology”, which includes various procedures in the areas of laundry hygiene, textile hygiene, anti-fouling and fungal tests, disinfectants and quality assurance. In addition, the department is involved in numerous R&D projects. The knowledge gained translates into new test methods, products and services.
How do consumers know if their device has the certified programs?
- All washing machines equipped with a UniversalDose drawer for detergent dosing have certified programmes.
- The following dryer models are certified: T9DE98685, T9DS88689, T8DBC40689, T8DBC40688, T8DBA6680, T8DB68689
- In the case of dishwashers, all freestanding and semi-integrated models are equipped with certified programs.
- The “Approved by Swissatest” logo on the AEG website marks the corresponding models as certified.
Have the programs also been checked for SARS-CoV-2?
- No testing has been done for SARS-CoV-2 because SARS-CoV-2 is classified as Risk Group 3. This limits the number of labs where testing can be done. (biosafety level 3 or 4).
- Because household appliances are open systems, it is difficult to protect laboratory personnel from infection.
- SARS-CoV-2 is an enveloped virus and therefore more sensitive to disinfection and cleaning measures than non-enveloped viruses.
- Non-enveloped viruses are generally more difficult to inactivate and require higher disinfectant concentrations and temperatures, while enveloped SARS-CoV-2 is easier to inactivate in a washing process (Sidwell & Dixon, 1969; Gerba, 2001; Gerba & Kennedy, 2007; Gerhardts et al., 2009; Heinzel et al., 2010).
- The tests at Swissatest were carried out using bacteriophage MS2 of the known E. coli envelopeless model virus, which has a high tolerance to disinfection and cleaning measures.
The Truth About Laundry, 2020, is based on a survey of 12,000 Europeans in 12 countries including Germany, UK, France, Russia, Sweden, Spain and Italy.
