This new Windows 10 feature starts with April Patch Day

Microsoft recently introduced a change. Feature updates for Windows are no longer only available with major release updates every six months, but also with optional updates and later on patch day. We’ll see what’s new now.

Microsoft now releases important innovations and optimizations all the time, but always with security and maintenance updates. The new cycle expects new features to be released first with monthly optional updates. Then each user can choose whether they want to use the update or not. On the regular Patch Day on the second Tuesday of the month, all optional update content will also be distributed to other users. According to Microsoft, there are no plans to release the new functions to all users at the same time, but only gradually.

We’ve already reported the most important new features in the optional March update. This content has now been adopted for April Patch Day KB5012599. The update starts for users of Windows 10 versions 21H2, 21H1 and 20H2. An important innovation are the so-called Search Highlights (we reported).

Microsoft writes about innovation in the Knowledge Base:

New! Presentation of highlights for research.

  • Search highlights highlight important and interesting times of the day, such as holidays, birthdays, and other training days, both around the world and in your area. For more details at a glance, point, click or tap the illustration in the search box.
  • For business customers, Search Highlights displays the latest updates from their organization and suggests people, files, and more.
  • Search Highlights will be available to Windows 10 customers in the coming weeks. We proceed in phases and measured. Wide availability will take place in the coming months. For more information, see Group Setup: Finding Highlights in Windows.
