Developer legend creates a new MMORPG with NFTs because there is a black market on eBay anyway

Richard Garriott is one of the best-known developers around MMORPGs. He created the Ultima Online milestone. He is now working on a new game based on blockchain and NFTs. He argues that players are selling items and accounts on the internet anyway. NFTs make these transactions safer and fairer.

What game is it going to be? Not much is known about the new MMORPG, it doesn’t even have an official name. Garriott will work on the title with fellow director Todd Porter (Ultima IV) and Chris Spears (Shroud of the Avatar).

The MMORPG aims to be a modern Ultima, with an isometric perspective, fantastic content, and custom shops and lands for players to own.

It will also rely on NFTs, which Garriot says will benefit gamers. Blockchain is meant to help make trading safer so players don’t have to go to black markets. However, he is unhappy with previous implementations of NFT games.

It was also Richard Garriott who coined the term MMORPG in the first place, as you can see in this video:

A modern Ultima with NFT and player funding

How is this supposed to work with NFTs? Players can purchase their own land for real money. There they can set up a shop or set up a portal to a dungeon they have developed themselves. In return, players can then charge something like entry or benefit directly from sales in their store.

NFTs and blockchain are meant to make trading safer and more efficient. Thus, players would no longer have to resort to eBay as before:

At Ultima Online, when people started buying and selling stores on eBay, we had to take the trouble to think about what we thought. Should we stop this because we cannot guarantee that the sale will really last? And we had none of that.

All we get from people selling items is risk and complaints. [Die Blockchain] is a means of regulating economic relations in a very fair and coherent way between the actors who buy, sell and exchange these virtual goods.

Players are also expected to earn real money through the NFT system, which ties them even more closely to gambling. Garriott explains that although he likes investing in cryptocurrency himself, everything is too complicated and confusing.

Their new MMORPG is not designed to educate players about cryptocurrencies, but to let all of these things happen in the background so players don’t have to immerse themselves in the world at all.

Players are skeptical, also because of Garriott’s story

By the way, who is Richard Garriott? Garriott is one of the most famous game developers in the world. Some know him by his “Lord British” ultimatum. Because Garriott had programmed himself as the master of the world he had created.

With the Ultima series, he cemented his reputation as a developer legend in the 80s. With Ultima Online, he developed one of the world’s first MMORPGs.

Then Garriott was still in space, living in some kind of castle in Texas and developing the online RPG Shroud of the Avatar.

YouTuber Josh Strife Hayes took a closer look at Shroud of the Avatar in 2020:

What’s wrong with the new MMORPG? Besides the fact that many gamers are also skeptical because of NFTs, Garriott lost his reputation through his latest project “Shroud of the Avatar”:

Ultimately, Shroud of the Avatar became a niche MMORPG that fell far short of the expectations and success of previous Garriott products. The fact that Chris Spears, the current boss of Shroud of the Avatar, is now also part of the new project and at the same time wants to continue exploiting the old MMORPG, strikes some negatively (by Twitter).

How do you see the idea of the new MMORPG? A modern Ultima Online appeals to you? And do you also see NFTs as a way to make trading safer? Or do you generally stay away from black markets?
