Amazon, 1/3 of employees in the United States and 50% of warehouse accidents.

It’s an AFP article that gives us two impressive numbers on Amazon that we all knew was a giant, but never mind at this point!

“Amazon employs a third of workers working in warehouses in the United States, but nearly half of workplace injuries at such locations occurred at the e-commerce giant in 2021, according to a report by a coalition of labor unions released on Tuesday.

Workers at Amazon’s fulfillment centers suffered more than 34,000 “serious injuries” at their jobs last year, twice the number at warehouses, according to the Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) Non-Seattle Americans.

“After relaxing some of its disciplinary measures in the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, Amazon reinstated its control systems and pressure on production in late 2020, and the injury rate increased dramatically as a result,” the SOC states.

The coalition says it relies on data provided by Amazon to OSHA, the federal agency responsible for the prevention of workplace injuries. The group did not immediately respond to a request from AFP.

Amazon has shut down with a vengeance during the pandemic. According to that report, the company has grown from about 700 locations in 2020 to more than 900 in 2021 in the United States, and from more than 200,000 employees in 2017 to more than 560,000 in 2021.

Amazon’s growth over the past two years of the pandemic has been phenomenal, as has its investments and hiring.

Aware of the social image risk for his company, Jeff Bezos declared that “we will be the best employer and the safest place to work in the world”, he had promised, referring in particular to measures already taken or in preparation to reduce the risk of Reduce musculoskeletal disorders associated with repetitive tasks.

Currently, Amazon is responsible for 50% of workplace injuries for 1/3 of all warehouse workers in the United States.

That’s not a good ratio for the American giant.
