What follows XCOM 2 as a free game?

from Thilo Bayer
Along with XCOM 2 and Insurmountable, there are currently two new free games in the Epic Games Store. And the two titles for the coming week are also fixed.

It remains so, Epic Games is once again offering two games in the Epic Games Store next week. This week is strategy heavyweight XCOM 2 and adventure game Insurmountable. Amnesia: Rebirth and Riverbond will follow next week.

This week: Insurmountable and XCOM 2

As of now, Epic Games is offering Insurmountable, among other things. The unusual rogue-lite game is only a year old and has an impressive user rating on rival Steam: 89% approval from just over 300 reviewers. Insurmountable is an adventure roguelike in which the player has to overcome huge mountains. Thanks to the procedurally generated environment, no two climbs are alike. Different characters have different skills, in the end there are three mountains to conquer. It really looks very promising.

If you don’t have XCOM 2 yet, now is your chance. XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the award-winning 2012 strategy game. It was released on February 4, 2016 and has a whopping 55.00 user ratings on Steam with an approval rating of 84%. XCOM 2 is at least a free game because some DLC can be brought to the interested party through the free base game. Concretely, Epic offers an Upgrade Collection at 8.99 euros, which includes the War of the Chosen expansion and 4 DLC packs (Resistance Fighter Pack, Children of Anarchy, Alien Hunter, Shen’s Last Gift).

Week Ahead: Amnesia: Rebirth and Riverbond

Amnesia: Rebirth is an October 2020 survival horror game developed and published by Frictional Games. It represents the third and newest installment in the horror series and boasts a long-term approval rating of 77% from its competitor Steam. Like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Rebirth can’t quite match the high approval ratings of the original Dark Descent, released in 2010. A machine for pigs has already been gifted to Epic Games, so the new collaboration is not not surprising. Rebirth is a 2018 title and that says a lot about its content: “A harrowing journey through desolation and despair that tests the limits of human endurance”.

Much less known than Amnesia: Rebith should be the second free game from April 21. Riverbond is a “fun, fast-paced adventure game in a stunning voxel world” that up to four players can experience together on the couch at home. Released on June 9, 2019, the title has apparently largely disappeared on Steam, as there are only 70 user reviews, which are “mostly positive” at 77%.
