Jeep Grand Wagoneer including the L version: A new giant luxury SUV is coming

Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer including L version
This jeep needs space. Lots of space!

A big name has returned: With the Jeep Wagoneer presented in 1962, the American brand had a real icon in its range. Far ahead of Britain’s Range Rover, the Wagoneer, which was huge by the standards of the time, was a luxury-class all-terrain vehicle – with leather and plushness, a thick V8 and fine equipment.

Formally, the marque’s primitive beast survived nearly unchanged for 30 years before becoming too anachronistic even for the nostalgic among Jeep makers. In the meantime, it was ennobled to the Grand Wagoneer, after the compact Jeep Cherokee was also offered as a special Wagoneer version, with wood trim and dual headlights.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is back in 2021

With the appearance of the first Jeep Grand Cherokee, the days of the big “Wago” were finally numbered, and after that nothing came for a long time. Until now, because the brand, which now belongs to the Stellantis group, returns in 2021 with two variants, the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer.

Give me the advantage: very stiff rear end at the Wagoneer.

With the new Wagoneer, Jeep shows the new design line of the brand, after a long time the design language of the Grand Cherokee has been reduced to more compact models. This change of direction in the face of the brand was confirmed with the presentation of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, which interprets the design of the front end in a way very similar to the Grand Wagoneer. Lots of space, little lights – that could be the short description of the distinctive Grand Wagoneer. The front and rear droop heavily, giving the seven-seater a decidedly boxy look, which is underlined by the almost vertical B, C and D pillars when viewed from the side. The door cutouts also emphasize these lines.

Inside: A cowboy meets a businessman

When it comes to the interior of the Grand Wagoneer, Jeep uses a rustic-modern mix. The furniture with large leather-covered surfaces could also be from a full-size American pickup, but on the other hand there is a veritable flood of screens. In addition to the fully digital instruments and the obligatory 12-inch screen of the multimedia system, there is another screen for the climate control under the central screen and a 10.25-inch touchscreen in front of the passenger seat. It is networked with the whole system and can display independent content – from videos to its own browser window.

On the center console you can see the actual width of the Jeep Wagoneer.

This continues in the rear seats: two individual screens at the height of the front head restraints for the entertainment programme, plus a central control screen for the climate control functions in rows two and three – the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is a seven-seater with full share. Additionally, the Wagoneer series is the first vehicle to feature the new “Amazon Fire-TV for Auto”. This entertainment feature will be integrated into the Uconnect 5 multimedia system. This allows for separate streaming of videos for individual seats and integrates apps known from Fire TV Home. The Fire TV system syncs with an existing Amazon account and then makes the same functions and content available on the go as on the home TV.

Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer and the L version

Besides the Grand Wagoneer, which as a luxury SUV is intended to stand up to the larger Lincoln and Cadillac models, there is also a Wagoneer variant without the “Grand” designation. It then goes up with equipment that is a little less pompous, but still very luxurious and is intended to serve a clientele that would otherwise flirt with a Ford Expedition, for example.

Even more impressive are the L versions of both model variants, which Jeep is introducing for the 2023 model year and showcasing at the 2022 New York International Auto Show. Its wheelbase has been lengthened by 17.8 centimeters to 3.30 meters; Overall, the full-size jeep grew by 30.5 centimeters to a length of 5.76 meters. The growth is aimed at optimizing both the legroom of passengers in the second and third rows of seats and the volume of the trunk. Even with a full crew, the luggage compartment can carry 1,252 liters of cargo, which is 448 more than the standard Wagoneer. When all the seats are folded down, the cargo volume is a whopping 3,707 litres.

Wagoneer L with the new Hurricane R6

With the (Grand) Wagoneer L, Jeep’s new engine family with the sonorous “Hurricane” name makes its debut at the same time. These are in-line six-cylinder gasoline engines with a displacement of three liters and a twin-turbocharger, which are used in two power levels. In the Wagoneer L, the engine delivers 426 hp and a maximum torque of 635 Newton meters. The Grand Wagoneer L even benefits from 517 hp and a maximum of 678 Nm. It also comes out with air as standard and damps semi-actively.

Despite the lower number of cylinders and less displacement, the new engines directly play the role of the upper aggregates. For comparison, the values of the V8 petrol engines in the model variants without “L”, which will remain at the level of the 2022 model year for the time being: the 6.4-liter Group engine, which delivers 477 hp , is used in the Grand Wagoneer; Jeep now offers the Hurricane engine as an option. The standard Wagoneer gets the 5.7-liter V8 petrol engine with “only” 397 hp. However, the little machine is at least equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The Wagoneers currently don’t have any other take on modernity, like a plug-in hybrid, so there’s still room for a model update.

Pickup ram acts as a platform

All model versions are available with height-adjustable air suspension and you have the choice of three different all-wheel-drive systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II). With the more complex, Quadra Drive II, there is also an off-road reduction and a differential brake on the rear axle on board. At most, the models offer five different driving modes. The base Wagoneer, on the other hand, rides without all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic serves as the power splitter for all engines.

The new Wagoneer is prepared for autonomous driving, the function will be activated later.

The new Wagoneer will be built alongside the Ram 1500 at the plant in Warren, Michigan. That explains the base, too, as the giant SUV stands on the platform of the big Ram pickup. In all versions, three rows of seats with a total of eight seats are standard. You have the choice between a central bench seat with two individual places, the “Captain Chairs”, which are standard on board the Grand Cherokee L. Of course, there is also no spillage in the loading area: if all the rear seats are folded down, the Wagoneer has a load volume of 3,300 liters, even with the second bench seat up it is still 2,000 liters – with the L versions it is proportionally more. The curb weights of the models vary, for an all-wheel-drive version they are between 2.8 and 2.9 tons. The trailer load of the Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer in the United States is 4.5 tons.

Jeep Wagoneer Price

With the base rear-drive Wagoneer, entry starts at $58,995, currently the equivalent of around €54,400. The base price of the Grand Wagoneer, which basically starts with all-wheel drive, more power and better equipment, is $88,640, or almost 81,700 euros. Both prices are before local transfer fees. Pricing for the new L trims has yet to be determined.

Jeep Wagoneer Carbide and Grand Wagoneer L

Stellantis North America

In the spring, Jeep introduces the new line of Carbide equipment (left) for the Wagoneer.

During the presentation of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L at the New York International Auto Show, Jeep presented a new trim line called “Carbide”, available for both newcomers and standard versions of the series . The set includes many dark visual accents for the exterior and interior. It will be available for model year 2022 representatives starting in the spring; 2023 cars will receive it as an option for the market launch in the second half of the year.

Wagoneer as its own sub-brand

Another interesting detail: Stellantis, the giant group formed by FCA and PSA, now operates the Wagoneer as its own sub-brand alongside Jeep. This indicates that, as with Land Rover/Range Rover, there will be a split into two brand lines with additional models and the two big Wagoneers are just the start.

That the Grand Wagoneer also comes to Europe is currently rather unlikely. The giant SUV segment like the Mercedes GLS or the BMW X7 is only well represented even in Germany. Competitors like Cadillac with the Escalade or Toyota with the luxury Land Cruiser V8 have long since withdrawn from our market.

Yes, it looks steep!

No, too big and angular!

The appearance of the huge off-roader clearly shows that the developers and designers were primarily targeting conservative American customers. With its size and huge entertainment range, the more powerful Grand Wagoneer is a luxury apartment on wheels. On the other hand, there is a drive technology that causes amazement in a car that will be launched in 2021. The six-cylinder Hurricane may be a step forward in terms of fuel efficiency; however, electrified drives are still nowhere in sight.
