In the second generation of the Niro SUV, Kia is sticking to the hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric car triad. There’s a bit more space, a new modern dashboard and a durable interior.

DThe electrification of the automotive world is unstoppable. Korean automaker Kia, which is owned by Hyundai, is now announcing “electrification everywhere” and aims to have fourteen purely electric models in its portfolio by 2027. Electric cars are not new to Kia. The Soul and Niro SUVs have been on the road as battery cars since 2018, and the Niro will be vying for customer favor in a new version this summer.

As before, the trio of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and purely electric vehicles will remain. The hybrid combines a 1.6-liter petrol engine with a 44 hp electric motor, together offering 141 hp and a relatively modest maximum torque of 144 Newton meters. With the plug-in, the same engine is combined with a more powerful electric motor, then 183 hp and 203 Nm are available. The possible autonomy in all-electric mode is 65 kilometres.

The most powerful of the Niro trio only runs on electricity. Its power plant offers 204 hp and a maximum torque of 255 Nm. A 65 kWh battery offers a range of approximately 460 kilometers. It can be charged with 100 kW. Kia promises that the battery can be charged from ten to eighty percent in three quarters of an hour. All Niros have front-wheel drive.

A first seat test suggests a relatively generous space.

The second generation is about six centimeters longer than the first, with an exterior length of 4.42 meters, the Niro is still among the compact SUVs. The dashboard design is reminiscent of the new EV6 and Kia Sportage. A large, slightly curved screen with a width of almost 80 centimeters dominates. A first seat test suggests a relatively generous space, leather seats are now frowned upon, all associated materials are durable. The trunk volume is a maximum of about 1400 liters, there are slight cuts in the plug-in. Prices start at 30,690 euros for the hybrid, the E-Niro costs 30,420 euros, thanks to the premium.
