Many competitions are held every year to reward new cars. Of course we are thinking of the most beautiful car of the year or the European trophy for the car of the year. But there is another competition, which is a little less well-known in Germany but is still widely talked about abroad: the World Car Awards. Translated as “World Car of the Year” trophy.

An international competition that, as the name suggests, awards the best car in the world according to several criteria. To be eligible, each model must be marketed in at least two major markets around the world. The winner is then chosen by a jury composed of 120 journalists from all over the world, including 22 Americans and only one French. Suffice it to say that our tricolor productions have little chance of winning.

Victory for Hyundai

However, it was not a North American manufacturer that won the trophy this year as it was awarded to the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The electric crossover then took the top spot a few months after its cousin, the Kia EV6, won the European Car of the Year award. Before the latter, the Korean was in the running, as was the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

But that’s not all, because the Ioniq 5 didn’t settle for the title of World Car of the Year. It even took the Best Electric Car of the Year award ahead of the Mercedes EQS and Audi e-tron GT. let’s not say” never two without three »? Well, this saying fits perfectly with Hyundai, which also dispenses with design when it comes to price.

An electrician in 2021

In fact, this isn’t the first time an electric model has been named best world car of the year. The new Volkswagen ID.4 received the prestigious award in 2021, two years after the Jaguar i-Pace. Then we have to go back to 2011 with the Nissan Leaf, which was also crowned by the journalists who were members of the jury during the competition.

As a reminder, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is already on sale and will come in two versions, with a 58 and 77 kWh battery. Based on the Kia-Hyundai Group’s CMP platform, it has outputs of between 170 and 306 hp, depending on the version.
