Russian forces on Saturday attacked the capital Kyiv and Lviv in western Ukraine, realizing their threat to launch more attacks on Ukrainian cities after the Russian flagship sank in the Black Sea. One person was killed and several others injured in the strikes in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klichko said on Saturday during a television conference.
In the early hours of the morning, an explosion was heard in the Darnytskyi district of south-eastern Kiev. According to Moscow, the strike hit an armored vehicle repair plant. The mayor of Kyiv said rescue workers and medics were working at the scene but gave no further details.
According to the Ukrainian military, Russian warplanes took off from Belarus and also hit the Lviv region near the Polish border, where four cruise missiles were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses. Russia also said it hit a military maintenance facility in the southern city of Mykolaiv.
retaliation from Russia
Russia vowed on Friday to launch fresh attacks on Kyiv and said it had used cruise missiles against the Vizar factory on the outskirts of Kyiv, which it said made and repaired missiles.
These attacks follow that shipwreck, Thursday, the Moskva, flagship of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. The United States is convinced the cruiser Moskva sank after it was hit by two Ukrainian missiles, a senior US official said on Friday.
A “symbol of power”
The cruiser Moscow was a “symbol from energyHope and rebirth of our fleet” after the fall of the Soviet Union, Captain Sergei Gorbachev said this Friday, 16 November 2014. The major city of Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, was the home port of the missile ship that had it took part in all recent Russian military campaigns, 2008 in Georgia, Syria and Ukraine.
“There will be victories, there will be tragedies, but the memories remain,” Captain Gorbachev added to a silent crowd including former crew members. “The loss of a ship, especially a flagship, is a tragedy for all the tens of thousands of people who have served on board for more than 20 years,” said Georgi Ployakov, an Orthodox priest who attended the ceremony.
The presence of Russian warships armed with missiles in the Black Sea increases the likelihood of attacks on Ukraine’s defense industry and logistical infrastructure, Ukraine’s military said on Saturday. She added that the Russian Navy is active in the Sea of Azov and is blockading the port of Mariupol.
Mariupol is still fighting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced on CNN on Friday that between 2,500 and 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died since the start of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, adding that 10,000 others had been injured. According to the Führer, from 19,000 to 20,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the war. For its part, Moscow had reported the deaths of 1,351 Russian soldiers and 3,825 wounded last month.
Yesterday Kyiv announced that it is attempting to break the siege on the city of Mariupol, where fighting is raging over the port and the Ilyich Steel Plant.
“The situation at Mariupol is tough and rough. It’s just fighting. The Russian army is constantly calling for additional troops to take the city,” said Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Motouzyanik. “But so far the Russians haven’t managed to capture them completely,” he said in a TV review.
For the first time since the offensive launched on February 24, Russia has engaged long-range bomber to hit the port city in south-eastern Ukraine, said Oleksandr Motouzyanik. Russian forces are also focusing their efforts on capturing the cities of Rubizhne and Popasna in the east of the country, he added.
