More than 140 investigations for having advocated a war of aggression
“Those who do this will bring war to Germany”
Unknown persons sprayed the symbol “Z” on the church of Gethsemane in Würzburg-Heuchelhof. The authors apparently want to express their support for the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. More and more federated states now want to act against it.
Police and prosecutors are investigating more than 140 cases due to support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Most of the time, this involves the use of the “Z” symbol. However, not all federal states collect data.
IIn several federal states, the police and prosecutor’s offices have launched a total of more than 140 investigations into support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. In the majority of cases, this is the use of the “Z” symbol, which the Russian army in Ukraine uses to mark its tanks and vehicles, among other things, as reported by the editorial network Germany (RND).
In Saxony-Anhalt alone, at least 19 violations of Article 140 of the Criminal Code, which makes rewarding and condoning crimes a punishable offence, have been recorded since the start of the Russian invasion. According to the state Department of the Interior, 17 of those cases involved the use of the “Z” symbol. The RND had interviewed the ministries of interior and justice and the criminal investigation offices of the federal states.
Also in the city-state of Hamburg, at least 17 procedures have already been initiated for the approval of a war of aggression. 16 of them deal with the use of the “Z” symbol. In North Rhine-Westphalia, 37 preliminary investigations are known, 22 of them because of the “Z” symbol. In addition, more than a hundred material damage linked to the war had been observed there. Here, too, the “Z” played a role in many cases.
In several federal states, the use of the symbol is considered illegal support for the Russian war of aggression, which violates international law. However, these investigations are not recorded separately by the authorities of all countries.
