After a quieter Easter Sunday, the northern highways were busier again on Monday: most travelers headed home.

It was particularly stagnant around Hamburg: traffic control centers reported several kilometers of traffic jams and slow traffic on the A1 and 7 motorways – including at the Elbe tunnel to the south. There were also traffic jams south of Hamburg from Monday afternoon. The A7 has been particularly hard hit – mainly in areas where works are currently being installed. Many vehicles were also driving north on the A7. It was particularly tight in the Heidekreis area. Sometimes there were long traffic jams. On Tuesday, the autobahns could weaken again, because it is the last day of vacation in Lower Saxony and Bremen.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania offers

Easter Sunday was relatively quiet, with only a few road delays. The ADAC spoke of “Easter peace”. Throughout the country, there was no traffic jam of more than ten kilometers, said a spokeswoman. It was different on Saturday: Traffic had already been blocked early in the morning on Autobahn 7 near Bad Fallingbostel in the Heidekreis. According to the ADAC, there are always delays, especially in the area of major construction sites on the motorways. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the National Office for Road Construction and Transport said it had completed or dismantled some construction sites before Easter to avoid traffic jams. Among other things, the two bridges to Usedom – the Peenebrücke in Wolgast and the Zecheriner Weighbridge – were able to be used normally again for a few days.

Long traffic jams on Good Friday

On Good Friday, motorists on the A1, 7 and 31 northbound had to be patient. Between Hanover and Hamburg, traffic on the A7 from the Walsroder Dreieck has been temporarily slowed down over a length of up to 15 kilometers. There was an equally long traffic jam on the northbound A1 between Bramsche and Holdorf.

Travel isn’t as strong as it was before the pandemic

According to the ADAC, the main reason for the increase in travel this year is that domestic travel is possible again. However, the travel wave did not reach the magnitude it had before Corona – experts expected that. Many people would probably do without longer trips and trips abroad, it was said in advance. The reasons for this are the high number of corona infections The war in Ukraine and the very high fuel prices.

Fuel prices: important differences

A current analysis by the ADAC of fuel prices in the 16 federal states shows that there are currently significant differences in fuel costs in Germany. The price difference is therefore particularly significant for diesel: drivers in Bremen and Hamburg pay an average of 1,925 euros per liter of diesel. For the same amount they have to pay 1,996 euros in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
