Sweet Spot Sunday: How to fly to Israel in business class for just 55,250 points

Sweet Spot Sunday: How to fly to Israel in business class for just 55,250 points

Iberia is the Spanish airline and has a very valuable loyalty program, called Iberia Plus.

One of the great spots in the program is the ability to fly between the East Coast and Israel for as little as:

  • 28,000 Avios from Iberia in economy class.
  • 55,250 Iberian Avios in business class.

For perspective, here’s what other airlines charge (usually) to get to Israel from the US:

Subscribe to our daily newsletter

  • American Airlines: 40,000 miles in economy class, 70,000 miles in business class.
  • Delta: Starting at 37,500 miles in economy class and 130,000 miles in business class on partner airlines.
  • United Airlines: 42,500 miles in economy class and 75,000 miles in business class.

Granted, Iberia doesn’t offer many open award seats for these lower fares compared to other airlines. But if you can plan your vacation around the availability of Iberia, you can easily save 30,000 miles round trip.

Let’s take a look at this excellent deal.

Why is it special

TPG Ratings estimates Avios to average 1.5 cents each. But when you book Business Class in Iberia, you are sure to get more value than that.

Here’s a quick look at the prize money for a round-trip flight between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) in early March. As you can see, the flights will cost 110,500 Avios and $366 in taxes and fees.

However, the exact same flights will cost $4,528 in cash. This means that you get a value of more than 3.76 cents per point – 2.5 times the amount estimated by TPG ratings.

As you can see above, the Iberia website allows you to split your payments between cash and Avios if you want to extend your rewards. The more you pay in favor of cash, the more value your points will return to you. For example, with the above flight, you can pay:

  • 93,900 Avios points, giving you a value of 4.09 cents per point.
  • 55300 Avios, which gives you a value of 5.73 cents per point.
  • 22,100 Avios, giving you a value of 11.28 cents per point.

  • Dulles International Airport, Washington, DC.
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
  1. These prices are for off-peak dates only. Could you Find off-peak times in Iberia here (Most days of the year are off-peak).

Step 2. Find flights operated by Iberia

Iberia usually offers a decent stock of reward flights thanks to the airline’s partnerships with British Airways, American Airlines, Royal Jordanian and other Oneworld airlines. However, you will only get the lowest price if you fly on Iberia for the entire trip. Be sure to find and book the Iberia-operated routes.

Step 3. Select your cabin

Once again, you’ll get the best value for Avios when you book Business Class. But 28,000 Avios in one-way economy to the Middle East is a serious deal, too. If you choose to travel in economy class, be sure to select ‘blue class’ for all phases of your journey to get the cheapest fare.

You can fly to Israel from the US for as little as 28,000 Iberian Avios in economy class and 55,250 Avios in business class. That’s a great distance for relatively few points.

However, you will have to travel from designated East Coast cities during off-peak times. And to get the best price, you’ll also have to fly on flights operated by Iberia, which connect via Madrid. If this isn’t a big deal for you, this is an excellent deal.
