Pickleball business is booming in Austin

Austin Airport (KXAN) One of the fastest growing sports in America has made its way to one of the fastest growing cities in America.

Over the past two years, pickleball has rebounded in popularity throughout the Austin area. Pickleball is a social sport played on an intense court and is a mixture of tennis and table tennis.

according to Sports and Fitness Industry AssociationOver the course of seven years, participation in the sport has nearly doubled to 5 million players in the United States. About 17% of players are 65 or older, while a third are under 25.

For Round Rock firefighter Seth Monroe, this opened up an opportunity to create a new business.

“It’s friendly for all ages, and fun for all body types, athletic sizes and shapes,” he said. “You could be a non-athlete or a super-athlete and also be successful at pickle ball.”

With this in mind, Monroe began 002, a brand that focuses on creating opportunities for fans of basketball. It puts on pickle ball tournaments and events and even sells merchandise for the growing sport.

In early 2020, it started hosting tournaments with around 12 teams.

Now, 002 has nearly 90 teams involved in each competition.

AJ Davis, who is based in Austin, plays pickle ball almost every day.

“It’s a great way to feel community, meet people and have a really good time,” she said.

This weekend, 002 is hosting its biggest tournament yet. More than 260 people registered in the second year Dink Jam and Peace Pickle Ball.

It will be held all day on Saturday and Sunday at the Austin Tennis Center.

It is one of 10 tournaments 002 has staged this year with more planned for 2023.
