NFTs are often thought of as flat images, but a bidding war broke out on Friday for actual chip-certified skateboards.
The auction – hosted by Chiru Labs, creators of the Azuki brand – allowed people to bid in Ethereum to secure one of eight skateboards, raising $2.5 million in ETH. Each skateboard is plated in 24-karat gold and weighs 45 pounds, according to Chiru Labs, which recommends owners not attempt to ride them.
The highest bidder paid just over $400,000 for one of the skateboards, compared to about $260,000 for the lowest successful bid. The uniqueness of the skateboards is ensured by a physical chip embedded inside, which can be scanned by a smartphone to verify ownership – an experience Chiru Labs calls “scan-to-own”.
Finally, NGL is the most powerful offering we’ve seen at the Azuki Golden Skateboard auction…
The most expensive plate went to an NFT collector named “dingaling,” which already has a huge collection of NFTs that includes 70 Azuki avatars, according to looks rare. After the auction ended, he called the Azuki community “the most decadent community” he’s seen on Twitter.
If one owner breaks from the torn board, Chiru Labs says someone else can scan the embedded chip to transfer ownership to another wallet. The panels represent Chiru Labs’ introduction to a physically backed token, or “PBT,” which links a physical object to a digital token on the Ethereum blockchain.
The company said that the technology can be used to prove the authenticity of physical goods in a way that enhances blockchain technology. “PBT” can also be used to keep track of who owned an item in the past, which can be useful in the art world for determining the provenance of a piece.
Azuki is one of the best groups when it comes to NFTs on OpenSea, according to Market Market website, ranked fifth, with a cumulative value of 174 ETH, or about $228,000, as of this writing. Friday’s auction dwarfed the namesake group of Chiru Labs by value.
Friday The auction isn’t the first time Chiru Labs has indulged in physical merchandise. Earlier this year, planes from owners of Azuki Avatars were taken down icons They can be replaced with physical jackets, with a design that combines American and Japanese street culture.
Tokens that are linked to selling physical items are not new to the Web3 space. Earlier this year, Tiffany & Co. announced. chest A series of NFTs that come with gem-encrusted pendants made as CryptoPunks. There was a house in Germany too Auctioned at OpenSea As an NFT.
